    A prison with few inmates became a global symbol of revolution.

    The Bastille represented royal authority and held stores of gunpowder sought by the crowd. Its fall on July 14 helped shift power away from the monarchy and remains commemorated as France’s national day.

    1,215 AD

    King John seals Magna Carta after a confrontation with rebellious English barons.

    A failed peace settlement became a durable symbol of limited government.

    Magna Carta was sealed at Runnymede and quickly collapsed as an immediate political agreement. Reissued versions survived, and later generations drew on its language to argue that rulers are subject to law.

    1,947 AD

    British colonial rule ends and India becomes independent amid partition.

    Freedom arrived together with displacement and communal violence.

    The British Raj was divided into the new states of India and Pakistan. Independence fulfilled a long anticolonial struggle, while partition forced millions across new borders and caused vast loss of life.

    Li Yuan takes the throne and establishes China’s Tang dynasty.

    A new dynasty began an era remembered for power, exchange, and cultural achievement.

    The Tang reunified much of China after the fall of the Sui. Its capital Chang’an became a cosmopolitan center connected to long-distance trade, while poetry, administration, religion, and art flourished.

    268 BC

    Ashoka begins ruling the Mauryan Empire in South Asia.

    An imperial conqueror later promoted an ethic of restraint and public welfare.

    After the destructive Kalinga war, Ashoka’s inscriptions emphasized dhamma, compassion, and responsible rule. His edicts across the empire are crucial evidence for Mauryan government and the spread of Buddhism.
